SUMMARY:Annual Conference and AGM: In the Time of the Tapestry: Aspects of England on the Eve of the Conquest
DESCRIPTION:The arrival of the Bayeux Tapestry in London and political events closer to our own time remind us that regime changes have massive impacts on countries’ populations. We hear about the politics\, but what was life actually like in England in the lead up to the Battle of Hastings?  We hope to give a flavour of it in this year’s conference\, at a new venue which we hope you will enjoy. \nThe conference will explore the late Anglo-Saxon period from various viewpoints and we have gathered together some of the south’s leading experts to help us: \nProfessor Ryan Lavelle will expound on the state of the country prior to the Norman invasion \nDr Rob Webley\, an expert on medieval metalwork\, will use finds from the Portable Antiquities Scheme to illustrate daily life \nProfessor Emerita Barbara Yorke will highlight the the importance of the Church in everyday life \nDr Katherine Weikert will enlarge on what it was like to be living in medieval times \nOur own Mary Harris will talk about the Tapestry itself and reveal some surprises about its content and construction. \nImage: Harold Godwinson and his retinue at Bosham (W Sussex) in 1064. \nBook your place(s) at https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/hantsfieldclubarchaeology

SUMMARY:Historic Buildings Section AGM and Presentation on WW2 Storage of Paintings
DESCRIPTION:Historic Buildings Section Annual General Meeting and Presentation \nThursday 5th November 2026 \n7.30 in the lecture Theatre Hampshire Record office Sussex Street\, Winchester. \nRobert Sutton MSc CIFA will provide a fascinating account of the Second World War story of the  underground facility\, documented by Cotswold Archaeology\, for the storage of the National Gallery’s Paintings. \nDuring World War Two the National Gallery stored nearly 2000 of its collection of paintings in the converted slate mine at Manod Quarry in Blaenau Ffestiniog North Wales. Churchill had vetoed the paintings being sent to Canada and said\, ‘Hide them in caves and cellars\, but not one picture shall leave this island’ The paintings left London in late August 1939 prior to the start of the war. Temporary storage was provided in various parts of Wales until facilities could be provided in the former underground slate quarry. \nThe talk will cost £10 for members and £12 for non-members Places can be booked at www.ticketsource.co.uk/hantsfieldclubhistoricbuildings. \nIf you wish to pay by cheque please email Frank Green: cahillgreen@talktalk.net

SUMMARY:Annual Lecture – Hampshire & the USA – Cheryl Butler
DESCRIPTION:Hampshire and the U S A: 1492 to the war of 1812!\nFriday 20 November 2026: 7.30pm \nFrom the disastrous voyage of Humphrey Gilbert to the war of 1812\, Hampshire played a unique role in the development of the United States.  The chequered history involved Elizabethan explorers\, Native American envoys\, spies\, the worst regiment in Canada\, witches\, mass marriages\, lost bodies\, cannibalism\, tobacco – and fish. \nFrom August 1583\, when North America was claimed for England\, to September 1783\, when most of it was lost\, to the almost forgotten war of 1812 – this lecture will transport you to the New World and back! \nDr Cheryl Butler is an Honorary Fellow of the University of Winchester\, Fellow of the Royal Historical Society\, and on the boards of the Southampton Records Series and the Hampshire Papers. \nSt Peter’s Church Pastoral Centre\, Jewry Street\, Winchester SO23 8RY. \nThis is a free event (but please book in advance) preceded by a short AGM.  \nBook now via Ticketsource
