SUMMARY:Unlocking Hampshire’s History: Celebrating its Historians & Archaeologists
DESCRIPTION:“Writing good local history depends on finding the best sources and remembering to cite them!” \nThese words echo the theme of this meeting\, which is based on the more than 200 profiles of individuals in HFC’s landmark project “Celebrating Hampshire Historians” (CHH). It will highlight the lives and work of many of those who\, in various ways\, have contributed to the story of the county. Although CHH literally “celebrates” the historians covered\, a wider aim has been to encourage awareness of their work\, and thereby “unlock” the county’s history and its wealth of sources\, printed\, audiovisual and online. All local historians will benefit from new insights into the range of materials on Hampshire that wait to be used. \nThe meeting will last one day and be open to all\, with a special price for HFC members. Refreshments will be available. \nProgramme\nThere will be eight talks of 30 minutes by experienced speakers on a wide variety of topics drawn from CHH\, as well as providing a platform for local history groups and other organisations to set out a stall. SUMMARY:An Afternoon Walk in Basingstoke Old Town Centre with Bill Fergie
DESCRIPTION:Meet at St Michaels Church by 3.00pm \nAn added attraction will be the opportunity to stay on at the end of the walk in the last building visited to enjoy some South Indian food.  The building is now an Indian Restaurant as well as being the earliest residential building so far identified in the town.  It has been radiocarbon dated to 1300-1326. \nWe will look at a number of buildings\, but only the final building (formerly the Anchor public house) will be looked at internally.  We have unfortunately been unable to persuade the church authorities to open either St Michael’s Church or Church Cottage.  However\, a study pack including drawings\, articles and notes about these and other buildings will be issued to participants at the beginning of the walk. \nWhen we meet at the Church at 3.00pm\, you will be asked if you intend to stay on for the meal at the Elai Restaurant.  This is so that the restaurant knows the approximate number of diners.  There will be flexibility either way\, as the restaurant only requires advance notice of approximate numbers. \nThe walk will cost £5 for members and £8 for guests. SUMMARY:PCA Excavations at Wickham\, Hampshire
DESCRIPTION:We are very lucky to have an arm of Pre-Construct Archaeology\, the commercial provider of heritage services\, based here in Hampshire. They undertake all kinds of archaeological services to industry and the public\, which we see mainly in the work they do ‘before the developer moves in’. They have undertaken work in the Wickham area and in 2026 they are doing an area excavation on a site to the south-east of the town. We have been invited to visit and tour with one of their project consultants. \nPrevious excavations in adjoining areas in 2025 demonstrated archaeology which included a Bronze Age barrow ditch and two cremations; a section of a Roman road and its flanking ditches. These yielded Romano-British finds consisting primarily of 2nd and 3rd century AD locally-produced pottery as well as a significant quantity of imported Samian ware\, which is suggestive of a Romano-British settlement of some status\, likely because of its position along the Roman road. \nThis exclusive evening tour is\, as usual\, free to Field Club members. SUMMARY:Southampton’s ancient monuments revisited
DESCRIPTION:Follow in the footsteps of the founding members of the Hampshire Field Club and Archaeological Society to see how Southampton’s medieval remains have survived numerous threats over the last 140 years and are now benefitting from major capital investment. Includes a visit to a long stretch of the north town wall with three towers made fully accessible for the first time since the 1540s. \nThis guided tour will last approximately 2 hours. It will highlight the Field Club’s involvement in saving some of the finest monuments and how they are being conserved for future generations – from the Bargate and the Town Walls to the Norman houses and the medieval wine vaults. \nJo Bailey\, Southampton City Council’s Monuments and Memorials Officer\, will lead the tour. Prior to being with the City Council Jo was an archaeologist in Winchester before moving into the museums sector in Hampshire and the south east.  She studied Archaeology at the University of Southampton and worked on excavations in other parts of the UK and Europe. She is also a former President of the Field Club. \nWe will meet on the south side of the Bargate\, under the sign saying “Meeting Point” at 9:50am for the tour to start promptly at 10am. NB The tour is limited to 25 people so early booking is recommended. \nThe visit will cost £5 for members and £8 for non-members. SUMMARY:Excavation Visit & Tour Buckler’s Hard Excavations
DESCRIPTION:The Buckler’s Hard Shipyard Trust has been excavating at the historic riverside site on the Beaulieu River in the New Forest to uncover the historical slipways where 55 wooden warships for the Royal Navy including Nelson’s favourite\, HMS Agamemnon\, were built. \nBuckler’s Hard village is famous as the private shipyard in use from around 1740 until 1971 when the boatyard operations moved upstream\, leaving the historic site preserved and undisturbed. \nA team from Southampton University\, with the national park archaeologists\, and Maritime Archaeology Trust will be displaying the special techniques used for this type of site. \nThe Field Club has been offered an exclusive tour of the excavations by the chair of the Trust\, Mary Montagu-Scott. After the tour\, attendees can visit the small museum (for a small charge) or take advantage of the eating\, drinking and walking facilities at Buckler’s Hard. A lovely summer’s day out in the National Park. \nThis exclusive tour is\, as usual\, free to Field Club members\, but we would be most grateful if you could contribute a donation at the dig itself. SUMMARY:King John's House
DESCRIPTION:Located in the heart of Romsey\, King John’s House and Museum offers a fascinating exploration of the town’s rich heritage through three unique historic buildings.  In February 2025\, a major fire caused extensive damage to the site. The Trust has embarked upon a significant restoration and renewal project to bring King John’s House back from the ashes. \nThe Field Club has contributed to the restoration fund and the Society has been invited to examine the journey to restore and preserve this treasured piece of Romsey’s history. \nMeet at King John’s House\, Church Street\, Romsey\, SO51 8BT on Wednesday 29 July at 1400. (There is parking for cars nearby in the town.) There will be a tour of the building and briefing upon the restoration progress. Tea will be available in the café on completion.
