SUMMARY:PCA Excavations at Wickham\, Hampshire
DESCRIPTION:We are very lucky to have an arm of Pre-Construct Archaeology\, the commercial provider of heritage services\, based here in Hampshire. They undertake all kinds of archaeological services to industry and the public\, which we see mainly in the work they do ‘before the developer moves in’. They have undertaken work in the Wickham area and in 2026 they are doing an area excavation on a site to the south-east of the town. We have been invited to visit and tour with one of their project consultants. \nPrevious excavations in adjoining areas in 2025 demonstrated archaeology which included a Bronze Age barrow ditch and two cremations; a section of a Roman road and its flanking ditches. These yielded Romano-British finds consisting primarily of 2nd and 3rd century AD locally-produced pottery as well as a significant quantity of imported Samian ware\, which is suggestive of a Romano-British settlement of some status\, likely because of its position along the Roman road. \nThis exclusive evening tour is\, as usual\, free to Field Club members. SUMMARY:An Afternoon Walk in Basingstoke Old Town Centre with Bill Fergie
DESCRIPTION:Meet at St Michaels Church by 3.00pm \nAn added attraction will be the opportunity to stay on at the end of the walk in the last building visited to enjoy some South Indian food.  The building is now an Indian Restaurant as well as being the earliest residential building so far identified in the town.  It has been radiocarbon dated to 1300-1326. \nWe will look at a number of buildings\, but only the final building (formerly the Anchor public house) will be looked at internally.  We have unfortunately been unable to persuade the church authorities to open either St Michael’s Church or Church Cottage.  However\, a study pack including drawings\, articles and notes about these and other buildings will be issued to participants at the beginning of the walk. \nWhen we meet at the Church at 3.00pm\, you will be asked if you intend to stay on for the meal at the Elai Restaurant.  This is so that the restaurant knows the approximate number of diners.  There will be flexibility either way\, as the restaurant only requires advance notice of approximate numbers. \nThe walk will cost £5 for members and £8 for guests. SUMMARY:Unlocking Hampshire’s History: Celebrating its Historians & Archaeologists
DESCRIPTION:“Writing good local history depends on finding the best sources and remembering to cite them!” \nThese words echo the theme of this meeting\, which is based on the more than 200 profiles of individuals in HFC’s landmark project “Celebrating Hampshire Historians” (CHH). It will highlight the lives and work of many of those who\, in various ways\, have contributed to the story of the county. Although CHH literally “celebrates” the historians covered\, a wider aim has been to encourage awareness of their work\, and thereby “unlock” the county’s history and its wealth of sources\, printed\, audiovisual and online. All local historians will benefit from new insights into the range of materials on Hampshire that wait to be used. \nThe meeting will last one day and be open to all\, with a special price for HFC members. Refreshments will be available. \nProgramme\nThere will be eight talks of 30 minutes by experienced speakers on a wide variety of topics drawn from CHH\, as well as providing a platform for local history groups and other organisations to set out a stall. SUMMARY:WARG at Hinton Ampner\, Hampshire
DESCRIPTION:Winchester Archaeology Group (WARG) will be returning to a group of Bronze Age barrows near Hinton Ampner for the third and final season of excavation in September. The apparently ploughed-out barrows\, in their valley bottom setting\, have unexpectedly revealed well preserved ditches protected by a considerable depth of hill-wash and a significant remnant of the barrow mounds. \nIn 2025 evidence of two funerary pyres was discovered and the excavation of these will continue\, alongside further exploration of the barrow ditches. The search for an elusive third barrow will continue. The dramatic rediscovery of a 1930 excavation trench was reported in the Hampshire Field Club Newsletter No 85 for Spring 2026. \nThis exclusive tour is\, as usual\, free to Field Club members\, but we would be most grateful if you could contribute at the dig itself. SUMMARY:OGS Crawford Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The 2026 OGS Crawford Lecture will be ‘My life and work in Winchester’ by Dr John Crook FSA. \nJohn Crook is an independent architectural historian\, archaeological consultant and photographer. \nHe has published many books on subjects ranging from the Medieval Cult of Saints to the activities of William Walker\, the diver employed to save Winchester Cathedral in the early twentieth century.  Much of his publication output is based upon his many years of work at the Cathedral and the Hospital of St Cross. \nMore recently his projects have included a major assessment of the development of Westminster\, involving the creation of a series of phased plans\, at 1:1000 scale\, from the twelfth to the twentieth century. \nHe will recall his long career in the midst of the archaeology of Winchester.  He says that he did not start by any orthodox route!

SUMMARY:Edward Roberts Memorial Lecture:  The Earliest Surviving English Houses 1150-1250 by Nick Hill
DESCRIPTION:The third Edward Roberts Memorial Lecture will be given by Nick Hill\, a buildings archaeologist and architectural historian with a particular interest in English houses of the medieval and early modern period.  He is a longstanding member of the Vernacular Architecture Group\, serving as its treasurer from 2008.  Before his recent retirement he was a chartered building surveyor and worked for over thirty years at Historic England\, delivering major building conservation projects.  He was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 2009 and awarded an MBE for services to heritage in 2024. \nNick is an occasional lecturer on the MSt course in Building History at Cambridge University and in recent years the main focus of his research has been Early English houses of c 1150-1250\, with studies of many major aisled halls and chamber blocks.  Houses with standing fabric of this date are rare\, but Hampshire is quite rich in surviving examples.  The lecture will cover Nick’s recent research and his studies of Warnford Manor\, Christchurch Castle Hall\, King John’s House at Romsey and Bishop’s Waltham Palace.

DESCRIPTION:The arrival of the Bayeux Tapestry in London and political events closer to our own time remind us that regime changes have massive impacts on countries’ populations. We hear about the politics\, but what was life actually like in England in the lead up to the Battle of Hastings?  We hope to give a flavour of it in this year’s conference\, at a new venue which we hope you will enjoy. \nThe conference will explore the late Anglo-Saxon period from various viewpoints and we have gathered together some of the south’s leading experts to help us: \nProfessor Ryan Lavelle will expound on the state of the country prior to the Norman invasion \nDr Rob Webley\, an expert on medieval metalwork\, will use finds from the Portable Antiquities Scheme to illustrate daily life \nProfessor Emerita Barbara Yorke will highlight the the importance of the Church in everyday life \nDr Katherine Weikert will enlarge on what it was like to be living in medieval times \nOur own Mary Harris will talk about the Tapestry itself and reveal some surprises about its content and construction. \nImage: Harold Godwinson and his retinue at Bosham (W Sussex) in 1064.
