Hampshire and the U S A: 1492 to the war of 1812!

From the disastrous voyage of Humphrey Gilbert to the war of 1812, Hampshire played a unique role in the development of the United States. The chequered history involved Elizabethan explorers, Native American envoys, spies, the worst regiment in Canada, witches, mass marriages, lost bodies, cannibalism, tobacco – and fish.
From August 1583, when North America was claimed for England, to September 1783, when most of it was lost, to the almost forgotten war of 1812 – this lecture will transport you to the New World and back!
Dr Cheryl Butler is an Honorary Fellow of the University of Winchester, Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, and on the boards of the Southampton Records Series and the Hampshire Papers.
