Celebrating Hampshire HistoriansBussby, Frederick1910 – 17 Sept 1981Born in Lancashire, Canon Bussby was a scholar at St John’s College, Durham and then an exhibitioner at Wadham College, Oxford. He was a curate in an industrial parish in Lancashire and then vice-principal of Clifton Theological College. He joined the Army in 1936 and was a Chaplain in France, Greece, Crete and North Africa, where he was awarded the MBE. By the end of the WW2 he was Staff Chaplain to Field Marshal Montgomery. From 1957 he served as a parish priest in Bournemouth until, in 1966, he was appointed Residentiary Canon of Winchester Cathedral, which he held until retirement in 1980. During this period he undertook, in turn, the roles of Sacrist, Treasurer and Librarian, and was Vice Dean from 1970. After retirement he continued as Librarian and Archivist. He died only a year after retirement while leading a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and is buried in Jerusalem, by the road to Bethlehem. He wrote extensively on Winchester Cathedral people, including a volume on William Walker, but is most notable for the impressive volume to mark the nine hundredth anniversary of the Cathedral’s foundation.Sources
