Celebrating Hampshire HistoriansPoole, E H (Edward Humphrey) Lane1889 - 1961E H Lane Poole was from a distinguished Oxford family. His father, Professor Reginald Lane Poole (1857–1939) was a historian and Keeper of the Archives at Oxford University, while his brother Austin (1889–1963) was a medievalist, and President of St John’s College. E H Lane Poole was also at Oxford, graduating from Balliol, but in 1913 he chose a diplomatic career becoming a pioneer administrator in Central Africa. He was there for more than a quarter of a century, becoming District Commissioner at Petauke in Northern Rhodesia, retiring in 1939. He continued to work for the Home Office during the war, but in the post-war period devoted his energies to ‘A Study in Local History’, in compiling an account of Damerham and Martin in the far west of the county. This work was completed by 1953, but not published until 1976, some fifteen years after his death. SourcesPortraitContribution to county’s historyA ‘meticulous’ study of the parishes of Damerham and Martin. A traditional local history but also an ‘excellent example of its genre’ (review by Peter Fowler, Archaeol Journ 135) Relevant published works
