O G S Crawford LectureTo commemorate the contribution to the Hampshire Field Club of O G S Crawford, an annual lecture on an aspect of archaeology, has been organised for many years. The 2022 Lecture will be held in the Cinema, Hampshire Record Office, Winchester at 7.30 p.m. on Wednesday 6th April.Archaeology on the maps of Ordnance SurveyAs it is 100 years since OGS Crawford started working for the Ordnance Survey in Southampton as its first Archaeological Officer, we are particularly delighted that Professor Roger Leech has accepted our invitation to give this year’s OGS Crawford Lecture. Professor Leech was Head of the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments for England (RCHME) office at the Ordnance Survey and is now Visiting Professor in Archaeology at the University of Southampton.
The talk will begin with the long history of the depiction of antiquities on the maps of Great Britain up to the early 20th century. It will then look at the contributions made by OGS Crawford and CW Phillips, in the depiction of antiquities on small and large scale maps, in the production of period or thematic maps, and in the creation of a national non-intensive record in the form of a card index of all archaeological sites in Great Britain. Professor Leech will then turn to the changes made by the Royal Commissions for England, Scotland and Wales, and his own involvement in the computerisation of the card index, formerly available online to all as Pastscape, but now accessed with difficulty through English Heritage’s Heritage Gateway.. He will conclude by looking at the legacy of these long-lasting archaeological efforts. Free parking is available, after 6.00 pm, in the multi-storey car park in Sussex Street. To book a seat, at this free lecture, in the Hampshire Record Office Cinema or attend online (both free of charge): Please go to www.ticketsource.co.uk/hantsfieldclub or ring Mike Broderick on 01256 351624.
