O G S Crawford Lecture 2023

To commemorate the contribution to the Hampshire Field Club of O G S Crawford, an annual lecture on an aspect of archaeology, has been organised for many years.

The 2023 Lecture was held in the Cinema, Hampshire Record Office, Winchester at 7.30 p.m. on Wednesday12th April.

'Cerne Abbas – Playing with Giant Ideas: new evidence from excavations at the Cerne Abbas Giant, Dorset.'

A leading environmental archaeologist and the former environmental manager at Wessex Archaeology, Mike Allen has published over a dozen books, including the text book ‘Molluscs in Archaeology’. Since 2007 (operating as Allen Environmental Archaeology), he has successful worked on commercial and research projects at Stonehenge, Avebury, Malta and across southern England.

His lecture will explored the use of environmental techniques to address the tricky problem of dating a hill figure and gave the opportunity for hands on experience with the equipment he uses daily.

He explained how OSL - Optically stimulated luminescence (link to a Wikipedia article) - and snails were used to date the Cerne Abbas Giant.
