Place-names of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight by Alfred Oscroft
Alfred Oscroft, who worked for the Ordnance Survey in the 1920s, was an
ardent researcher into Hampshire placenames.
His grandson, James Oscroft
Wilkes, born in Britain but relocated to the
United States, was given the “miraculously
preserved” manuscripts. Fortunately
for us, Jim decided to publish these, and
even more fortunately he verified his
grandfather’s researches and illustrated
them with Oscroft’s wonderful water
colours, and with many prints and maps.
Oliver Padel, the former President of
the English Place-Name Society, says,
“This volume will delight all who love
Hampshire, and despite its age it still has
much to offer the place-name scholar. We
all share a debt of gratitude to Professor
Wilkes.”
In fact, our debt of gratitude goes beyond
that because he has made copies available
to the Field Club, with the profits to go to
Society funds. |
