Archaeology Section - Lecture Series

In lieu of the Annual Conference in 2021, the Section has arranged a series of lectures on the topic of:

Belief and Ritual in Roman Britain

These lectures will be spread over five weeks in November and early December. The provisional programme looks as follows:

  • Tuesday, 2nd November, 7.30pm. Professor Will Bowden, University of Nottingham:
    • Religion and the urban landscape: excavations at the extra mural temple at Caistor-by Norwich.

  • Tuesday 9th November, 7.30pm. Professor Tony King, Winchester University:
    • ‘Celtic to Romano-Celtic: Archaeology and Topography of religious Sites from the 1st century BC into the Roman period.’

  • Tuesday 16th November, 7.30pm. Sophie Jackson, Director of Developer Services, MOLA:
    • ‘Reconstructing the London Mithraeum’

  • Tuesday 23rd November, 7.30pm. Dr Denise Allen, Independent Researcher:
    • What do we know about the use of glass in Romano- British rituals of life and death?

  • Thursday 2nd December, 7.30pm. Dr Roger Tomlin, Oxford University:
    • Writing to the Gods in Roman Hampshire: Curse tablets from Silchester and the Hamble Estuary

Places can be booked via Ticket Source EITHER for the whole series of lectures: Members 10 and non-Members 15 OR individual lecture can be booked: Members £3 and non-Members £4 with links given below:
