'The Battle of Cheriton 1644 -
A New Interpretation'

John Dixon, Pike & Shot Society

Abstract

Is there still scope for further interpretations of the Battle of Cheriton, one of the lesser known but most debated Battles of the First Civil War? This presentation reviews the past interpretations of the Battle of Cheriton and presents a further version based on analysis of the armies, the ground over which the battle was fought and the often contradictory written evidence that emerged after the Battle. In this interpretation, the probability that a fight took place in Cheriton Wood, included in previous versions of events and possibly the most well known phase of the battle is challenged.
