'The Sieges of 'Loyalty House',
and What Remains'

Alan Turton, Basing House

Abstract

In the nine years of the English Civil War, there were only a dozen major field battles, Cheriton being the only one in Hampshire. The majority of the conflict consisted of sieges and skirmishes between neighbouring garrisons. Thanks to the many contemporary printed sources, the three main sieges of Basing House are amongst the best documented of the war, and combined with the substantial surviving physical remains, allow a detailed picture to be reconstructed of this turbulent final phase in the history of a great Hampshire House.
