Local History Section Spring Symposium - jointly with the Wessex Centre for History & Archaeology

Anniversaries and Memorialisation

Date: May 2020

Five speakers were to focus on various anniversaries of events and persons, all of which have a particular resonance in Hampshire. Some are well known and others less so, in each case particular consideration was to be given as to how they have been memorialized.

The Symposium was to be held in the Cinema at the Hampshire Record Office, Sussex Street, Winchester.

  • 09.20 - Welcome & Registration

  • 09.50 - Frank Green - Romsey Abbey - 900 years (the current Abbey building was opened in 1120)

  • 10.45 - Dr Cheryl Butler - Peartree Church, Southampton - 400 years - the link is to a YouTube video - (consecrated 1620)

  • 11.40 - Dr Tom Hulme - Mayflower - 400 years - the link is to a 19-minute podcast - and Mayflower and Britain - this link is to a YouTube video - (sailed from Southampton 1620)

  • 12.35 - Lunch Break

  • 13.35 - Dr Jonathan Memel - Florence Nightingale - 200 years (she had close family connections with Embley in Hampshire & was born May 12 1820)

  • 14.30 - Refreshment Break

  • 14.50 - Steve Alcock - Edwin Moon - 100 years (an aviation pioneer from Hampshire who died in flying accident April 29 1920)

  • 15.45 - Finish
