What has Dendrochonology ever done for Hampshire?Edward Roberts has devoted a great deal of his life to the study of Hampshire's buildings, particularly its timber framed buildings. He was a founding member of the Hampshire Buildings Survey Group in the late 1970s, and on behalf of that group he has, over the last 14 years, masterminded one of the most extensive tree ring dating exercises of any county in the country. The first 10 years of that work contributed core information for his book "Hampshire Houses 1250-1700: Their Dating and Development", published in 2003. This is already a standard work. Edward has not rested on his laurels however, and, with the benefit of a grant from the Field Club, is currently seeking to widen our knowledge of the dating and development of agricultural buildings in the county. |
